Posted in Health by admin - Dec 17, 2009
Henri K. Junttila asked:
Finding the best antioxidant supplement is easy nowadays. You can find a product almost everywhere, but how can you determine if it is worth buying and if it has any effect on your body whatsoever?
One of the best ways to get the health benefits of antioxidants is to look for a multi-nutrient formula that not only combines antioxidants, but also vitamins, minerals, enzymes, amino acids, herbs and other specialty ingredients.
The large majority of these ingredients can help make each ingredient stronger, they enhance the health benefits synergistically.
With all that said, here are 4 powerful antioxidants that you should look for in the best antioxidant supplement.
1. Astaxanthin – A strong antioxidant that is primarily used for macular degeneration, stroke, cancer, hypercholesterolemia, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease.
2. Vitamin E – The natural form of vitamin E is an antioxidant that your body needs to prevent damage to your cells and prevent vein degeneration. It may also help with epilepsy, arthritis, athletic performance, angina, impotence, cancer, heart attacks, ulcers, PMS and wound healing.
3. L-Glutathione – Reduces aging because of its antioxidant properties. You cannot release Glutathione in the stomach because it gets destroyed by your stomach acid, which is why you need enteric coating that protects it from your stomach acid. Researchers have found that many diseases can be caused by depleted Glutathione levels.
4. N-Acetyl-Cysteine – A stable form of the amino acid L-cysteine. It is a crucial antioxidant in your body that boosts your immune system and can help with allergies, cancer, injuries and detoxification just to name a few.
Finding the best antioxidant supplement that is truly able to deliver health benefits to your body can be hard and even frustrating at times, but by doing your own research and learning how these nutrients work, you should have no trouble finding the best antioxidant supplement for a good price.

Great article! Finding the best antioxidant out there is quite a challenge, I agree. You would think if antioxidants were so important, your body would make them, and indeed, the most powerful and plentiful antioxidant that your body makes, called the Master Antioxidant, is glutathione. As you mentioned, you cannot eat glutathione and expect it to raise your glutathione. Lipoceutical or Liposomal glutathione has a special coating on it, to protect the glutathione from being digested in the stomach, and much remains to be seen through further studies as to the effectiveness of this method of raising glutathione intracellularly. The best ways are to give your body the building blocks to make it in your cells.
Jimmy Gutman, MD, FACEP is the world’s most published author on the subject of glutathione, and his bestseller “Glutathione – Your Key to Health” contains a listing of all of the researched and proven ways to raise glutathione thus far. The two most thoroughly studied and effective ways of raising glutathione are with variants of cysteine. N-acetyl-cysteine, as you mentioned, is one of them, but has potentially toxic side effects, a short half life, and more research is ongoing as to the safety of long term chronic usage. The other well studied method is with a bonded cysteine supplement called Immunocal.
Vitamin E is necessary as well, as you mention, as it is a necessary co-factor for effective glutathione production.
You can read the summation of all the ways to raise glutathione based on this bestseller mentioned above here:
